Fall 2021 Interior Design Trends

banner

Looking for ideas on how to decorate and style your space for Fall? There’s no better time than to start planning and curating your pieces now. Late summer is a great time to start thinking about and transitioning to the next season.

The pandemic has created some lasting trends with interior design. Clients and customers are opting for less high maintenance pieces and opting for things that are both functional, and comfortable.

We’re seeing lots of cozy fabrics and textures, warmer and darker wood tones, and doing away with the sterile white and gray kitchens of seasons past. Personalization is also high on the list, instead of buying brand new off-the-shelf decor pieces, vintage pieces continue to be popular to help differentiate our homes from looking too staged and cookie-cutter.

Black Kitchens

The antithesis of the white kitchen, these moody, elegant, and dramatic kitchens offer a breath of fresh air to the monotone white kitchen design scene. We’ve seen a lot of dramatic color-themed kitchens ranging from sage green to the darkest blues, but these black kitchens have us turning our heads. It serves as a great neutral base for virtually anything to be layered on top.

Black kitchens look stunning and elegant paired with gleaming warm finishes like brass and champagne bronze. Check out what Hickory Hardware has in store for Brushed Golden Brass and keep an eye out on the blog and Instagram for future finish releases!

Veranda, Bridges, Studio, and Dover are worth checking out if you’re considering a bold traditional style kitchen. If you’re seeking more cup pull options, you can check the filtered page here for a ton of styles. Cup Pulls from our Cottage and Williamsburg collections are some of our bestselling designs.

Have you also noticed that these kitchens are leaning rather traditional in style? This is another trend we’re seeing in a move away from standard shaker front cabinets. They add a timeless classic appeal and coexist wonderfully with darker wood floors like the beautiful herringbone flooring above.

Deep Wood Tones

Light-colored wood and white-washed cabinets, floors, and farmhouse furniture have run their course. Designers have moved on and we’ve seen a strong resurgence of embracing richer and deeper wood tones again. This ties in perfectly when sourcing older vintage pieces locally or in places like Chairish. What’s old is new again and mid to dark tone natural materials are very in again.

Even contemporary designs like the kitchen above are embracing a warm wood finish, showing off the authentic natural beauty and grain of walnut. What’s great about warmer wood stains is the ability for them to hold their own.

Like the staircase below styled by the ultra-talented Kelly Wearstler, combining several different runners side by side in bold designs and patterns. This same look may have been a bit too much on a lighter wood or gray staircase, but it looks elevated and works harmoniously with the overall warmth of the midtone wood.

What we’ve also seen quite a bit of is pairing Matte Black or Black Iron hardware with wood grain kitchens and furniture. Black hardware serves as a neutral accent, giving the wood the space to take center stage. Dark and antique finishes also pair well with the cottagecore aesthetic that is still going very strong today.

For a similar hardware look, check out the Mountain Lodge collection cup pull. For something much more minimalist, take a look at the Rockford lip pulls, Streamline collection and classic Bar Pulls.

Textural Materials

Next up are decor accessories and materials which go a long way in making a space feel Fall ready. Think of cozy textural elements like boucle fabrics, sheepskin, and leather throw pillows and furniture.

Boucle was widely popularized by fashion icon Coco Chanel, who incorporated the nubby fabric into her most iconic and enduring jacket designs. Today we’ve seen the strong resurgence of this fabric being used in furniture pieces crop up all over Instagram, though most often iterated in a soft off-white color.

Just when we thought fluffy pillows and furniture had already seen themselves out, think of those oversaturated faux fur pillows and 3-legged ottomans and footstools; they’re coming back in a big way, both in fashion and interior design.

As the seasons cool, I’m betting we’ll be seeing more and more of this incorporation of all forms of wooly and soft materials as evidenced by Behati Prinsloo’s exclamation for these being her favorite chairs in a recent Architectural Digest house tour with husband and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. There is no shortage of examples of fluffy Icelandic and Mongolian sheepskin furniture on the market right now, from Restoration Hardware to CB2 and beyond.

We touched on the popularity of natural materials like cane and rattan in our previous Nursery Trends post and just because summer is coming to an end, doesn’t mean these pieces have to be stowed away. I myself have considered updating some of my light fixtures with IKEA’s amazing Torared lampshades made of seagrass. The 22” oversize version would look so chic over a dining table or bedroom.

In more elevated looks, we’ve seen the natural material trend like wicker and rattan skewing a touch darker, paralleling the wood trend.

If investing in a big piece of furniture isn’t your thing at the moment, there’s plenty of other ways to make your space more fall-ready. A few months ago, I recall seeing an interior designer’s home outfitted with these really cool edgy leather pillows in the living room, and appreciating how unique and different they looked and how ahead of their time it was. How often do you see leather pillows in a relative’s or friend’s home? I imagined how buttery soft they must’ve felt and the fine earthy scent of finished leather.

The timing couldn’t be more right for these new leather pillow releases from CB2. If you’re thinking about sprucing up your fabric sofa for Fall, you could splurge on some authentic leather cushions to add a new textural element in the room.

Another quick way to incorporate some leather in your space are with the Hickory Hardware Bradford leather pulls. It’s a great conversation starter for your kitchen or furniture upgrade. These are just a few inspiring designs incorporating leather cabinet pulls:

Sculptural Shapes

Combine the trends of rich colors, tactile textures, and the wildest of vintage dreams and you got this universal thirst for finding the weird, the different, the rare and slightly off-kilter pieces like the vintage and widely coveted leather DS-600 sofa above.

It’s a move towards finding that ultimate Instagram and viral-worthy sculptural piece. A more feasible way to add some unusual sculptural elements in a space is to find a statement lamp. We’ve seen so many incredible designs come about both from indie designers and mainstream companies.

I was already familiar with HAY’s Matin Lamp, but when I happened across Oscar Piccolo’s works online, his lamps shot to the top of my wishlist with their vintage-inspired squiggly base and paper parasol-like shade. I’ve seen wavy shaped stuff before, like vintage candlesticks with a similar squiggly stem but in a lamp form? Sold, sold, sold!

Empire and pleated lampshades have also made their comeback for some time now, making the circular and columnar lampshades a bit dated. These conical shapes work wonderfully if you’re looking to add some contrast to your environment with these angular and sculptural designs. We’ve also seen designers take more risks with the design of the lamp base, an upgrade from the usual basic rectangular style or urn-shaped bases.

Hickory Hardware has a giant archive of designs, a few them fall under that funky and sculptural umbrella. What comes to mind are a few pieces from the Metropolis collection, like these wavy pulls here, here and here. The Deco collection and this cube knob.
